MCMC to Take Legal Action Against Papagomo Over False Claims of Court Report Suppression

PUTRAJAYA, April 9 – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has announced that it will initiate legal action against Wan Muhammad Azri Wan Deris over allegations deemed false and misleading, involving claims that the commission suppressed a court report.

In a statement issued today, MCMC firmly denied the allegations, stating that it had no involvement whatsoever in any attempt to block media coverage related to a court case involving Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.

Wan Muhammad Azri, widely known as Papagomo, is alleged to have made claims linking the commission to actions restricting the publication of court-related information, which authorities say are baseless.

“The commission was not involved in the matter and has never issued any directive or request to any media organisation or digital platform to restrict such content,” the statement read.

Firm Response to Misinformation

MCMC stressed that the spread of such unfounded claims could mislead the public and undermine confidence in public institutions.

As a result, the commission is taking legal steps against the individual involved, signalling a stricter enforcement approach against misinformation in the digital space.

The move reflects growing concern among regulators over the increasing prevalence of false information circulating online, particularly when it involves sensitive legal or political matters.

No Interference in Media Reporting

Clarifying its position, MCMC reiterated that it does not interfere with media reporting, including coverage of court proceedings.

Its mandate, the commission explained, is limited to regulating the communications and multimedia sector while ensuring compliance with relevant laws.

This clarification aims to counter perceptions of undue influence or censorship, particularly in cases involving high-profile individuals.

Rising Concerns Over Social Media Abuse

The commission also highlighted the broader issue of social media misuse, where unverified claims are rapidly disseminated without proper fact-checking.

Such practices, it warned, can create confusion, distort public perception, and potentially impact social stability.

“Strict action will be taken against any individual found to be misusing digital platforms to spread false information,” MCMC said.

Public Urged to Verify Before Sharing

At the same time, the commission urged the public to exercise caution and verify information before sharing it, especially when it involves legal or sensitive matters.

Promoting responsible digital behaviour is seen as essential in maintaining a trustworthy information ecosystem.

The case is expected to serve as another test of enforcement efforts aimed at curbing misinformation and reinforcing accountability in Malaysia’s digital landscape.
