Malaysia’s Petroleum Supply Remains Stable as Government Prepares Contingency Measures – Fadillah
KUALA LUMPUR, — Malaysia’s petroleum supply remains stable and sufficient despite global energy market uncertainties, with the government prepared to activate contingency measures if necessary, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said.
He emphasised that proactive planning has been put in place to ensure uninterrupted energy supply, even in the face of prolonged disruptions caused by geopolitical tensions in West Asia.
According to Fadillah, the contingency plan includes sourcing petroleum from alternative markets to reduce reliance on potentially affected supply routes.
“As an open economy, Malaysia is not immune to global energy disruptions. However, we are well-prepared and have taken proactive steps to manage the impact,” he said.
Coordinated Response to Global Energy Challenges
Fadillah made the remarks during a special briefing on the global energy crisis, held following Cabinet instructions to strengthen coordination in managing the situation.
He said a Communication Command Centre has been established under the National Economic Action Council to streamline government actions and ensure clear communication.
“This initiative is crucial to ensure coordinated efforts and timely dissemination of information,” he said.
Daily Monitoring of Supply Chain
To maintain stability, the government, together with Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) and industry players, is closely monitoring the petroleum supply chain on a daily basis.
Fadillah said this approach enables early detection of potential risks and allows for swift intervention when needed.
“Continuous monitoring ensures that any disruption can be addressed promptly, safeguarding both the market and consumers,” he said.
Engagement with Industry Stakeholders
The government has also intensified engagement with industry stakeholders to gather real-time feedback and insights.
Fadillah said this collaboration allows policymakers to respond more effectively to evolving global conditions.
“Feedback from industry players is essential in helping us adapt our strategies to current developments,” he said.
Impact of Strategic Routes on Oil Prices
He noted that disruptions to key global shipping routes, such as the Strait of Hormuz, have contributed to increased market uncertainty and sustained pressure on oil prices.
Such developments, he said, highlight the importance of preparedness and diversification in energy sourcing.
Public Assurance Amid Uncertainty
Fadillah urged the public to remain calm, assuring that the government has taken comprehensive measures to ensure energy security.
He said the overall strategy reflects Malaysia’s readiness to navigate global challenges while protecting economic stability and public welfare.
“We will remain vigilant and prepared to respond to any scenario,” he said.
The approach underscores the government’s commitment to maintaining a stable energy supply while adapting to the evolving global energy landscape.
