EARTH DEFENSE FORCE 5 and 6 Heading to Nintendo Switch 2 in Global Expansion Push

TOKYO: Japanese game publisher D3Publisher has announced that EARTH DEFENSE FORCE 5 and EARTH DEFENSE FORCE 6 will be released for the new Nintendo Switch 2, bringing the long-running action franchise to a broader audience.

The company confirmed that EARTH DEFENSE FORCE 5 will launch worldwide on October 8, 2026, while EARTH DEFENSE FORCE 6 is scheduled to arrive globally during the winter release window.

The move represents a major expansion for the franchise, which has traditionally been associated with PlayStation platforms and PC gaming.

EARTH DEFENSE FORCE 5 has already established itself as one of the series’ most successful entries, attracting more than two million players worldwide across previous platforms. The game is known for its large-scale battles, where players take on the role of soldiers defending Earth against overwhelming invasions by giant creatures and extraterrestrial forces.

The Nintendo Switch 2 version is expected to deliver the same signature experience, featuring massive enemy swarms, explosive combat scenarios and extensive weapon customisation options that have become hallmarks of the franchise.

Originally launched in 2003 as part of Japan’s SIMPLE2000 budget game series, EARTH DEFENSE FORCE has evolved into a globally recognised action-shooter brand with a dedicated fanbase.

One of the strengths of EARTH DEFENSE FORCE 5 is its refreshed storyline, which serves as a new starting point for the franchise. This approach allows newcomers to jump into the series without needing extensive knowledge of previous titles while still offering familiar elements for long-time fans.

The sequel, EARTH DEFENSE FORCE 6, builds directly upon the events of EDF5 and expands the universe with new missions, enhanced gameplay systems, additional weapons and more formidable enemies.

Although D3Publisher has yet to reveal detailed information regarding the Switch 2 version of EDF6, the company indicated that further announcements will be made closer to launch.

Industry observers view the Nintendo Switch 2 releases as an opportunity for the franchise to reach a significantly larger audience, especially among Nintendo players who have not previously had access to the latest mainline EARTH DEFENSE FORCE titles.

With both games scheduled for worldwide release, D3Publisher is positioning the series for continued growth as it enters a new generation of gaming hardware.
