Government Prioritises Cost of Living Relief and Income Growth Amid Energy Crisis – Ahmad Zahid

PUTRAJAYA, — The government is placing strong emphasis on reducing the cost of living burden while boosting household income as it navigates the impact of the global energy crisis on prices and daily expenses.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the approach was a central focus of the National Cost of Living Action Council (NACCOL) meeting, which he chaired earlier today.

He stressed that safeguarding the welfare of the people remains a top priority, with targeted and responsive measures being implemented to address current economic challenges.

“The interests of the people will always come first, and we will take firm action against any parties that violate regulations or exploit the situation,” he said.

Firm Action Against Unjustified Price Hikes

Ahmad Zahid warned that the government would not tolerate unreasonable price increases, particularly those justified by ongoing tensions in West Asia.

He said authorities will continue to monitor market conditions closely to prevent unfair practices that could burden consumers.

“This is not a time for opportunistic behaviour. We will act decisively where necessary,” he said.

Regular Meetings to Address Ongoing Challenges

As part of its response strategy, Ahmad Zahid announced that NACCOL meetings will be held more frequently based on current needs to ensure timely decision-making.

He said the evolving global situation requires continuous monitoring and flexible policy responses.

“We must remain agile in our approach to address changing conditions,” he said.

RM54.7 Billion Allocated for Public Support

To support the population, the government has allocated RM54.7 billion in 2026 for subsidies, social assistance, and income-enhancing initiatives.

Key programmes include Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR), Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA), Rahmah Sales Programme, as well as fuel and agricultural subsidies.

Ahmad Zahid said these initiatives are designed to provide direct relief to the rakyat, particularly those in lower- and middle-income groups.

“This allocation reflects our commitment to ensuring that assistance reaches those who need it most,” he said.

Subsidies May Increase if Needed

He added that subsidy allocations may be adjusted depending on how the global energy situation evolves, particularly in relation to developments in West Asia.

The government, he said, is prepared to respond accordingly to protect consumers from rising costs.

Focus on Infrastructure and Economic Opportunities

Beyond financial aid, the government is also focusing on strengthening public transportation systems and expanding economic and employment opportunities.

Ahmad Zahid said efforts will also be made to improve communication with the public to ensure greater transparency and understanding of government measures.

“Clear communication is essential so that people can plan their lives more effectively,” he said.

The approach reflects a comprehensive strategy aimed at addressing cost of living challenges while maintaining economic stability and protecting public welfare.
