Malaysia Airlines Unveils ‘Thousand-Mile Horse’ Film to Reinforce Long-Term China Growth Strategy
Campaign highlights airline’s expanding presence and sustainable engagement in the Greater China market
HANOI, March 5 — Malaysia Airlines has introduced a new promotional film titled “Thousand-Mile Horse: A Journey Together in the Year of the Horse”, aimed at audiences in China and major global markets as part of its strategy to strengthen its presence in the Chinese travel sector.
The film, released during the Lunar New Year celebrations, reflects the airline’s broader commitment to expanding connectivity between China and Malaysia while reinforcing Kuala Lumpur’s role as a key transit hub linking China with Southeast Asia, Australia and other international destinations.
Rather than serving solely as a seasonal marketing campaign, the film represents Malaysia Airlines’ long-term investment in developing the Chinese market.
The initiative accompanies the airline’s ongoing efforts to expand routes, revive strategic destinations and strengthen engagement with Chinese travellers.
Strengthening the Greater China Network
Malaysia Airlines has been steadily expanding its footprint across the Greater China region as part of its growth strategy.
In January 2026, the airline resumed daily direct flights to Chengdu, bringing its total number of destinations in Greater China to seven.
The airline currently serves major cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Xiamen, Hong Kong and Taipei.
The expanded network further enhances Kuala Lumpur’s position as a major transit hub connecting travellers between China and various destinations in Southeast Asia, Australia and beyond.
During 2025, Malaysia Airlines transported around 860,000 passengers between China and Malaysia.
The airline also operated 52 weekly flights across its Greater China network during the same period.
These figures highlight the airline’s continued investment in strengthening connectivity between the two countries.
China Remains a Key Market
Bryan Foong, Chief Executive Officer of the Aviation Business Unit at Malaysia Aviation Group, said China remains one of the airline’s most important markets.
“China is one of our top strategic markets. We are accelerating network expansion, revitalising key destinations and strengthening long-term engagement with Chinese travellers,” he said.
According to Foong, the Thousand-Mile Horse film symbolises the airline’s long-term vision of growing alongside the Chinese market while expanding travel opportunities between China, Malaysia and surrounding regions.
Symbolism of the Thousand-Mile Horse
The film draws inspiration from the concept of the “Thousand-Mile Horse” in Chinese literature, which symbolises perseverance, strength and forward momentum.
Within the context of Malaysia Airlines’ strategy in China, the symbol represents the airline’s ambition to accelerate growth and strengthen its presence in the market.
The story begins with a child asking what a “Thousand-Mile Horse” means.
Through everyday family moments, two young brothers imagine the mythical creature before gradually discovering its deeper significance.
The narrative reaches its climax at an airport, where the child points to a Malaysia Airlines aircraft and proclaims that he has found the “Thousand-Mile Horse”.
The scene serves as an allegory for discovery and progress, mirroring the airline’s journey of expansion in the Chinese market.
Reinforcing the ‘It’s Time’ Global Campaign
The film also supports Malaysia Airlines’ global campaign “It’s Time”, which encourages travellers to rediscover the meaning of purposeful travel.
It complements the airline’s brand series “Celebrating Every Moment, Making Every Trip Complete”, highlighting its commitment to delivering premium travel experiences rooted in Malaysian hospitality.
Passengers experience this through thoughtful service touches, including Kids’ Activity Packs, attentive cabin care and curated in-flight dining inspired by Malaysia’s culinary heritage.
Malaysia Airlines emphasises that Malaysian hospitality remains a defining element of its service philosophy.
Entering a New Phase of Expansion
As 2026 begins under the symbolic Year of the Horse, Malaysia Airlines is entering a renewed phase of growth.
The airline plans to gradually expand operational capacity while strengthening its commercial foundations and sustainable growth strategy in the Greater China market.
Through initiatives such as the Thousand-Mile Horse campaign, Malaysia Airlines signals renewed momentum as it continues expanding its global network and reinforcing its presence in one of the world’s most dynamic aviation markets.
