KLIA operations remain smooth despite Middle East conflict causing flight cancellations

SEPANG, March 1 — Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) continues to function normally and efficiently even as escalating tensions in the Middle East have forced multiple flight cancellations, Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) confirmed today.

The airport operator said both KLIA Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 remain fully operational, with passenger handling processes such as check-in, security screening, and immigration clearance proceeding without disruption.

According to MAHB, a total of 26 flights have been cancelled so far, involving 13 arrivals and 13 departures. These cancellations primarily affected routes to and from several Middle Eastern destinations, as well as selected long-haul services requiring adjustments to avoid restricted or unsafe airspace.

Despite the cancellations, MAHB stressed that there have been no reports of passengers stranded at the airport under its Crisis Response System. Passenger movement throughout both terminals remains orderly, with airport personnel continuing to manage operations smoothly.

Situation remains dynamic

However, MAHB cautioned that the situation remains fluid and could change depending on ongoing security assessments and airspace conditions.

Airlines operating long-distance routes are closely monitoring developments and may need to implement alternative flight paths to ensure passenger safety and regulatory compliance.

Malaysia Airports said it is maintaining close coordination with airlines and aviation stakeholders to ensure airport operations remain safe, efficient, and well-organised.

Passengers travelling to or transiting through affected regions have been strongly advised to check their flight status directly with their respective airlines before heading to the airport. They are also encouraged to keep their contact details updated and monitor official airline announcements for any schedule changes.

Crisis response measures activated

MAHB said regular crisis coordination meetings are currently being held, with situation reports shared among key stakeholders to maintain an accurate and up-to-date operational overview.

Airlines are required to promptly notify airport authorities of any operational changes, including cancellations, diversions, or revised schedules.

The airport operator added that contingency plans remain in place should the situation worsen, ensuring a structured and coordinated response across the airport ecosystem.

Regional conflict disrupts aviation

The flight disruptions come amid heightened military tensions in the Middle East after the United States and Israel reportedly launched strikes on Iranian targets, including in Tehran.

Iran subsequently carried out retaliatory missile attacks against Israeli territory and US military installations in the region.

The escalating conflict has triggered widespread aviation disruption, with thousands of flights cancelled and several countries closing portions of their airspace for safety reasons.

Major airlines, including Malaysia Airlines, Qatar Airways, Saudia, and Abu Dhabi-based carriers, have already suspended or cancelled numerous services.

Nevertheless, KLIA’s continued operational stability highlights the airport’s preparedness and crisis management capability in responding to global aviation disruptions.
