Johor Polls: Perikatan Nasional Targets Full 56-Seat Contest, Keeps Door Open for Muda Partnership
ISKANDAR PUTERI — Perikatan Nasional is preparing for a comprehensive electoral push in Johor, with plans to contest all 56 state assembly seats in the upcoming state election while signalling openness to a potential alliance with Malaysian United Democratic Alliance.
Johor Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia chief Sahruddin Jamal said the coalition has reached an advanced stage of readiness and is capable of facing the polls at short notice. The move to field candidates in every constituency reflects a strategic decision to strengthen its statewide presence and maximise electoral impact.
Statewide Strategy Signals Aggressive Campaign Approach
Sahruddin explained that the coalition intends to leave no constituency uncontested, a move aimed at reinforcing its organisational strength across Johor. He noted that the final list of candidates will be forwarded to the central leadership for approval before any official announcement is made.
The decision to contest all seats is widely seen as a sign of confidence within the coalition, suggesting that it is positioning itself as a major challenger in the state’s political landscape.
At the same time, internal organisational matters remain under discussion, particularly the appointment of a Johor PN chairman, which is expected to play a key role in coordinating campaign efforts.
Leadership Appointment Yet to Be Finalised
Sahruddin revealed that Muhyiddin Yassin, president of Bersatu, has already submitted a proposed candidate for the state leadership role. However, the decision is still pending, with no official confirmation issued thus far.
He acknowledged that the absence of a confirmed state chairman has not affected overall preparations but emphasised that the appointment is crucial for ensuring effective coordination during the campaign period.
The leadership decision is expected to shape the coalition’s strategy and influence how resources are deployed across constituencies.
Muda Engagement Reflects Strategic Calculations
On the possibility of collaboration, Amira Aisya Abd Aziz confirmed that Muda has initiated preliminary discussions with Johor PN, although no formal agreement has been reached.
She said the party is still evaluating its options and will announce its position at an appropriate time, indicating that negotiations remain fluid.
The openness to cooperation highlights the evolving dynamics among opposition parties, as they explore potential alliances to enhance their competitiveness in the election.
Selective Seat Focus by Muda
Amira Aisya disclosed that Muda is considering contesting between five and 10 constituencies, targeting areas with a mix of urban and rural voters. The strategy is designed to maximise the party’s influence while complementing broader opposition efforts.
As the incumbent for Puteri Wangsa, she confirmed her intention to defend the seat, which is expected to be a focal point of competition in the election.
She also welcomed the participation of other parties, signalling readiness for a multi-cornered contest.
Key Battlegrounds Expected to Intensify Competition
The Puteri Wangsa constituency is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched seats, with interest from parties aligned with Pakatan Harapan, including People’s Justice Party and Parti Amanah Negara.
The anticipated contest reflects the broader competitive environment in Johor, where multiple parties are vying for influence ahead of the state polls.
