House-of-Worship Issues Must Be Resolved Through Dialogue and Legal Compliance, Says Aaron Ago

PUTRAJAYA — Matters concerning the construction of houses of worship must be addressed through dialogue and negotiation involving all stakeholders, said National Unity Minister Aaron Ago Dagang.

He stressed that the ministry remains open to constructive engagement aimed at reaching solutions that are fair, harmonious and grounded in the rule of law.

According to Aaron, such an approach reflects Malaysia’s identity as a multi-religious nation built on mutual respect and tolerance.

Proposal for a National Committee

He expressed support for a proposal by senior lawyer Mohamed Haniff Khatri Abdulla to establish a national-level committee to address issues involving places of worship lacking proper approval.

The committee, he suggested, should comprise experts in religious affairs, land administration, local government and legal matters to ensure balanced and law-based decisions.

Royal Decree Emphasising Rule of Law

The ministry also welcomed the decree by Sultan Ibrahim, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, who emphasised that matters relating to the construction of temples, mosques, churches or other places of worship must comply strictly with the law and should not be politicised.

The decree underscored that Malaysia’s strength lies in harmony, tolerance and adherence to lawful processes.

Legal Framework

Aaron reiterated that issues must be handled in accordance with existing legislation, including the Local Government Act 1976 and the Town and Country Planning Act 1976, through the mechanisms of PLANMalaysia.

He concluded that safeguarding unity, peace and social stability is a shared responsibility that transcends religious and cultural differences, and must be anchored firmly in respect for the law.
