Hadi: New Opposition Leader to Be Finalised Ahead of June Parliamentary Sitting

KUALA NERUS — Abdul Hadi Awang, president of PAS, said a decision on the next Opposition Leader is expected to be finalised before Parliament reconvenes in June.

Although no candidate has been confirmed, Hadi indicated that discussions are ongoing among opposition parties to ensure a consensus-driven decision that reflects unity within the bloc.

He stressed that the appointment cannot be rushed, as it involves coordination among all opposition lawmakers, including representatives from Sabah and Sarawak.

“This is not a decision for a single party. It requires agreement from all opposition MPs to ensure a unified front,” he told reporters.

Hadi added that there is sufficient time before the next Dewan Rakyat sitting, allowing for thorough consultations and deliberations among coalition members.

At present, he said, the opposition’s focus remains on internal party matters and strengthening coordination within the Perikatan Nasional (PN) alliance.

The issue of leadership has gained attention following the political developments surrounding current Opposition Leader Hamzah Zainudin, who continues to hold the position despite recent changes in his party status.

Under parliamentary convention, the Opposition Leader is typically drawn from the head of the largest opposition bloc in the Dewan Rakyat.

As such, the selection process is expected to balance political representation while identifying a leader capable of uniting the various parties within the opposition coalition.

Overall, the emphasis on consensus highlights the opposition’s effort to present a cohesive and stable leadership ahead of the upcoming parliamentary session.
