Elderly Couple Among Three Seriously Injured in SILK Highway Crash
KAJANG: An elderly married couple were among three people seriously injured following a two-car collision at Kilometre 3.5 of the Kajang SILK Highway near Balakong last night.
The accident, which occurred at around 9.10pm, is believed to have happened after a vehicle travelling from Kampung Baru Balakong towards Kajang lost control while descending a slope before crashing into another car travelling in the middle lane of the highway.
Kajang district police chief Naazron Abdul Yusof said preliminary investigations found that the vehicle involved was allegedly travelling at high speed before the driver failed to maintain control.
“The vehicle subsequently collided with another car travelling along the middle lane of the highway,” he said in a statement today.
According to him, the local couple, aged 60 and 61, suffered serious head and hand injuries as a result of the impact.
A 35-year-old local male driver involved in the collision also sustained severe head injuries.
All victims were rushed to Hospital Sultan Idris Shah Serdang for further medical treatment.
Firefighters Assisted in Rescue Operation
Meanwhile, personnel from the Jabatan Bomba dan Penyelamat Malaysia (JBPM) were deployed to the scene to help rescue a victim trapped inside one of the heavily damaged vehicles.
Images from the scene showed firefighters using special rescue equipment to extricate a male victim from the wreckage after the vehicle sustained severe front-end damage.
Police said the case is currently being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving causing an accident.
Authorities have urged members of the public with information related to the incident to contact investigating officer Inspector Saifudin Saadun at 011-21119379 to assist investigations.
Motorists have also been reminded to drive cautiously, obey speed regulations and remain alert while travelling on highways and downhill stretches to avoid similar accidents.
