“Do Not Undermine IIUM’s Capabilities,” Says Fahmi Fadzil
PUTRAJAYA: Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil has urged all parties not to underestimate the capabilities of local higher education institutions, particularly the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), in conducting academic and policy-related research.
He made the statement in response to remarks by Perikatan Nasional chief whip Takiyuddin Hassan, who questioned IIUM’s study on the proposed Kuala Lumpur mayoral election.
According to Fahmi, such comments reflect a lack of respect for the vital role played by universities in shaping public policy and national development.
“I am disappointed that some parties are questioning IIUM’s ability to conduct research. This is not a healthy attitude, especially coming from political leaders,” he said.
He was speaking to reporters in Putrajaya today.
Recognised Academic Standing
Fahmi stressed that IIUM is a well-established institution with strong academic credentials and international recognition.
He noted that the university has produced many professionals and leaders who have contributed significantly at both national and global levels.
“IIUM has a proven track record. It is a respected institution that has nurtured leaders not only in Malaysia but abroad. Undermining its capacity is unjustified,” he said.
He added that the government values the input of local universities in providing research-based recommendations and policy insights.
Mayoral Election Proposal Still at Preliminary Stage
Commenting on the proposed Kuala Lumpur mayoral election, Fahmi clarified that no formal report or findings have been presented to the Cabinet so far.
He said the matter has yet to be officially discussed at the ministerial level.
“There has been no formal presentation. The Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department for Federal Territories, Hannah Yeoh, only briefed us verbally. It is still too early to make any decision,” he said.
Fahmi emphasised that any future decision would be based on comprehensive evaluation, including legal, administrative and public interest considerations.
