Dataran Merdeka prepares for massive World Cup final screening with 300,000 fans expected
KUALA LUMPUR: The capital is set to witness one of its largest football gatherings as up to 300,000 fans are expected to pack Dataran Merdeka for a public screening of the FIFA World Cup final tomorrow night.
The highly anticipated match will be broadcast on what organisers describe as the largest screen ever installed at Dataran Merdeka, creating a historic viewing experience for football supporters from across the country.
The free public screening will begin at 8pm and continue until the conclusion of the final in the early hours of Monday, allowing fans to experience the world’s biggest football event together in the heart of Kuala Lumpur.
Organisers are also aiming for the giant screen installation to receive recognition from the Malaysia Book of Records as a new achievement for the iconic city landmark.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Fadil Marsus said authorities are preparing for a major turnout, with thousands of football enthusiasts expected to gather at the historic square to watch the tournament finale on a massive scale.
“We expect about 300,000 people that night alone. We hope to fill Dataran Merdeka,” he said.
Fadil encouraged residents and visitors, particularly football fans in Kuala Lumpur, to participate in the free screening, describing it as the main highlight of the Uniti Merdeka programme.
The event forms part of a two-day community celebration organised by Yayasan Prihatin Nasional in collaboration with Kuala Lumpur police, government agencies and 13 ministries.
Beyond the World Cup screening, the programme features various community activities aimed at bringing Malaysians together through sports, entertainment and social engagement.
Earlier on Saturday, about 2,000 participants took part in a 5km community run at Dataran Merdeka as part of the weekend programme.
The morning activity also included a lucky draw, with a motorcycle offered as the grand prize for participants.
With the World Cup final attracting global attention, authorities are expecting Dataran Merdeka to become a focal point for football celebrations, bringing together supporters of different backgrounds to share the excitement of the tournament’s biggest match.
Police are expected to implement crowd management measures to ensure public safety and maintain smooth movement throughout the event, given the anticipated large gathering.
The massive screening is set to become another memorable public event at Dataran Merdeka, adding to the historic venue’s reputation as a gathering place for major national and community celebrations.
