BN secures landslide victory with 48 seats as PH wins eight in Johor polls
JOHOR BAHRU: Barisan Nasional (BN) has secured a commanding victory in the 16th Johor State Election after winning 48 of the 56 seats contested, according to the official results announced by the Election Commission (EC).
The outcome gives BN a two-thirds majority in the Johor State Legislative Assembly, comfortably surpassing the 39-seat threshold required for such a mandate.
Within the coalition, UMNO emerged as the largest contributor by capturing 36 state seats, followed by MCA with eight seats and MIC with four.
Pakatan Harapan (PH) secured the remaining eight seats, comprising six won by DAP and one each by PKR and Amanah.
Perikatan Nasional (PN), Bersama, MUDA, Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) and other contesting parties failed to win any seats in the election.
Among the key outcomes, BN successfully wrested several constituencies from its rivals, including Perling, Johor Jaya, Jementah, Bukit Batu and Bukit Kepong, while also capturing Maharani, previously held by PN.
The coalition also retained a string of traditional strongholds, including Machap, Kota Iskandar, Kempas, Larkin, Permas, Mahkota, Layang-Layang, Rengit, Kukup, Johor Lama, Penawar, Sedili, Pasir Raja, Semarang, Tenggaroh, Serom, Benut, Bekok, Yong Peng, Tangkak, Pekan Nanas and Tanjung Surat.
Among the notable victories, Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi successfully defended the Machap seat, while former health minister Datuk Dr Adham Baba retained Pasir Raja.
MIC’s K. Raven Kumar also defended Kemelah for BN with a majority of 3,838 votes, while Alwiyah Talib retained Endau after previously winning the seat under the Bersatu banner in the 2022 election.
For PH, the coalition managed to hold on to several urban constituencies, including Skudai, Senai, Stulang, Penggaram, Mengkibol, Bentayan and Simpang Jeram.
Former education minister Maszlee Malik also retained Puteri Wangsa for PH.
The election results mark a significant turnaround from the previous state election, with BN reclaiming several constituencies that had been lost to PH and PN in 2022, reinforcing the coalition’s dominance in Johor.
The official outcome also paves the way for BN to form the next Johor state government with one of its strongest electoral mandates in recent years.
