Malaysia Airlines expands flight cancellations as Typhoon Bavi disrupts operations

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Airlines has announced additional flight cancellations involving its Shanghai services as Typhoon Bavi continues to disrupt weather conditions across parts of East Asia, affecting flight operations over the weekend.

The national carrier said the latest cancellations involve flights operating between Kuala Lumpur and Shanghai on July 11 and July 12 following adverse weather conditions brought about by the typhoon.

The move comes a day after Malaysia Airlines cancelled its Kuala Lumpur-Taipei services due to the same weather system.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the airline confirmed that flights MH386 and MH388 from Kuala Lumpur to Shanghai, as well as return service MH389 from Shanghai to Kuala Lumpur, scheduled for July 11, have been cancelled.

Flight MH387 from Shanghai to Kuala Lumpur, scheduled to operate on July 12, has also been called off as precautionary measures remain in place.

On Friday, Malaysia Airlines announced the cancellation of flights MH366 from Kuala Lumpur to Taipei and MH367 from Taipei to Kuala Lumpur, both scheduled for July 11, citing safety concerns arising from Typhoon Bavi.

The airline said it is closely monitoring developments related to the typhoon and will continue providing operational updates should weather conditions change.

Passengers are encouraged to ensure their contact information is updated through the “My Booking” section on the Malaysia Airlines website or mobile application to receive the latest notifications via email and SMS.

Malaysia Airlines said affected travellers may opt for a full refund or reschedule their journey on the same route without additional charges within 30 days from the original travel date.

Customers can process the changes through the “My Booking” portal, AskMH Live Chat or the Malaysia Airlines Global Contact Centre.

The airline stressed that passenger and crew safety remains its highest priority in all operational decisions and said flight schedules will continue to be reviewed based on weather developments and safety assessments.

According to weather forecasts, Typhoon Bavi is expected to move northwest at a speed of between 15 and 20 kilometres per hour, bringing heavy rainfall to coastal areas stretching from Xiapu in Fujian Province to Wenling in Zhejiang Province before gradually weakening.

Strong winds are also forecast across waters east of Taiwan, much of the East China Sea, surrounding waters near the Diaoyu Islands, as well as coastal areas of Taiwan, Zhejiang and Fujian, contributing to continued disruptions to regional air travel.
