Azlee Senario Pays Emotional Tribute to Jalil Hamid, Remembers Him as Early Mentor and Pillar of Local Comedy Scene

SHAH ALAM — Veteran comedian Azlee Senario has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Jalil Hamid, describing the late actor as a foundational mentor who played a crucial role in shaping the early journey of the popular comedy group Senario.

Speaking during a visit to Masjid Al-Munawwarah, Azlee, whose real name is Muhammad Azlee Jaafar, shared that Jalil’s contributions went far beyond casual collaboration, as he had guided the group extensively during their formative years in the early 2000s.

A Guiding Figure in Senario’s Early Days

According to Azlee, Jalil was instrumental in refining the group’s performance quality, instilling discipline, and shaping their understanding of acting techniques. He recalled how the late actor would often provide hands-on guidance during sitcom productions, ensuring that every member understood the importance of stage presence and professional conduct.

“He was the one who taught us how to fully utilise the stage, how to command space, and how to deliver performances effectively,” Azlee said, adding that Jalil’s mentorship had a lasting impact on the group’s development.

He emphasised that the loss of Jalil is not only a personal one but also a significant blow to Malaysia’s entertainment industry, which has lost a figure widely respected for his talent and dedication.

Shock and Grief Following the News

Azlee admitted that he initially struggled to believe the news of Jalil’s passing, which he first received through WhatsApp. Known for his cautious approach to information circulating on social media, he chose to verify the news directly with the late actor’s daughter before sharing it with others.

“I am not someone who immediately believes what I see online. I needed confirmation from a reliable source,” he explained.

Upon receiving confirmation from Jalil’s daughter, Afiqah, Azlee took it upon himself to inform fellow members of Senario. He revealed that the news came as a shock to many, with several members, including Wahid and Pak Ya, reportedly overwhelmed with emotion.

“They were deeply affected. It was a moment of disbelief and sadness for all of us,” he said.

Last Collaboration and Unexpected Loss

Azlee also reflected on his last professional collaboration with Jalil, which took place several years ago during the filming of a drama project in Kuang, Selangor. Despite being aware of Jalil’s health challenges in the past, he noted that the late actor had shown signs of recovery and remained active.

The sudden deterioration of his condition, however, caught many by surprise.

“We knew he had been unwell before, but we always prayed for his recovery. It was unexpected to hear that his condition worsened so quickly,” Azlee said.

Legacy of a Respected Artist

Jalil Hamid leaves behind a legacy marked by versatility and excellence in acting, music, and comedy. Over the years, he earned recognition for his performances, including winning Best Supporting Actor at the 13th Malaysian Film Festival for his role in Baginda.

He also received accolades at the 2016 Screen Awards for his supporting role in the drama Calon Syurga, as well as Best Actor honours at the 2018 Telenovela Awards for his performance in Bisik Pada Langit.

Azlee concluded his remarks by offering prayers for Jalil’s soul and extending condolences to his family, urging them to remain strong during this difficult time.

“May he be placed among the righteous, and may his family find strength in this loss,” he said.

Jalil Hamid was reported to have passed away at his residence at approximately 12.30pm. He will be laid to rest at the USJ 21 Islamic Cemetery following Asar prayers.
