Alleged Plot to Topple Government Must Be Investigated Thoroughly and Independently, Says Azam Baki

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 28 — Allegations of a coordinated attempt to destabilise the government and undermine national stability must be investigated comprehensively and transparently, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said.

He stressed that any claims involving threats to national sovereignty, political stability and democratic institutions must be handled with seriousness and professionalism.

Police given full responsibility to investigate

Azam said he has entrusted the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) to conduct a full and independent investigation into the matter following reports that were lodged earlier.

“I leave it entirely to the police to carry out a detailed, transparent and professional investigation. Any issue involving national sovereignty is a serious matter that must be examined thoroughly,” he said.

He confirmed that the police had received a report related to the alleged plot prior to official announcements made by both the Inspector-General of Police and the Attorney General’s Chambers.

The allegations reportedly involve efforts to weaken the government’s position and create pressure on national leadership as well as key enforcement institutions.

Too early to link investigation to MACC cases

When asked whether the case was connected to ongoing MACC investigations, Azam said it was premature to draw any conclusions.

He explained that the MACC conducts its investigations strictly based on complaints and evidence received, and all actions are taken in accordance with legal procedures.

“At this stage, it is important to allow the police to complete their investigation. The MACC continues to perform its duties independently and professionally,” he said.

He reiterated the commission’s commitment to upholding integrity and ensuring that its investigations remain free from external influence.

Probe launched under law protecting parliamentary democracy

Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail previously confirmed that authorities had initiated an investigation after receiving a report on the matter.

The case is being handled by the Classified Crime Investigation Unit under Bukit Aman’s Criminal Investigation Department.

Authorities are investigating the matter under Section 124B of the Penal Code, which covers offences involving activities that threaten parliamentary democracy.

The law applies to individuals or groups found to be directly or indirectly involved in actions that could undermine democratic governance.

Attorney General’s Chambers warns of strict legal action

Meanwhile, the Attorney General’s Chambers stated that it views the allegations seriously and will not hesitate to take legal action against anyone found responsible.

It stressed that enforcement would be carried out fairly and without regard to an individual’s status, influence or background.

The chambers also warned that any attempt to disrupt political stability, national security or public order would be treated as a serious offence that threatens the country’s democratic system.

Investigation crucial to safeguard national stability

The ongoing investigation reflects the authorities’ commitment to preserving political stability and protecting the nation’s democratic institutions.

A transparent and thorough probe is expected to clarify the situation and determine whether any wrongdoing has taken place.

As Malaysia continues to navigate political and economic challenges, maintaining strong and trusted institutions remains essential to ensuring long-term national stability and public confidence.
