Sanusi: Kedah open to all candidates, including Khairy Jamaluddin
ALOR SETAR, April 18 — Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor said the state welcomes any political figure wishing to contest in upcoming elections, including former Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin.
He stressed that Malaysia’s democratic system allows individuals to stand as candidates in any state, leaving the decision entirely in the hands of voters.
Open political environment in Kedah
Sanusi, who also chairs Perikatan Nasional (PN) Kedah, described the state as an open arena where political competition is encouraged and determined by public support.
He said the possibility of Khairy contesting in Kedah does not pose an issue, as the outcome ultimately depends on the electorate.
Khairy’s connection to Kedah noted
The Menteri Besar also pointed out Khairy’s familial ties to Kedah, suggesting that the politician is familiar with the state’s culture and social landscape.
However, he emphasised that any decision to contest rests solely with Khairy himself.
Response to Umno’s proposal
Sanusi was responding to remarks from Umno members who suggested that Khairy could play a key role in reviving the party’s influence in Kedah.
Kedah Umno Youth Information chief Mohd Safwan Jaafar had reportedly highlighted Khairy’s leadership qualities and ideas as factors that could reshape voter sentiment in the state.
Recent developments within Umno
Khairy, along with Hishammuddin Hussein, was among thousands of former members recently readmitted into the party.
The move is widely seen as part of Umno’s broader strategy to rebuild its strength ahead of future electoral contests.
