Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar Confirms Hamzah Zainudin No Longer Opposition Leader
MUAR: Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar has confirmed that Larut MP Hamzah Zainudin is no longer serving as Opposition Leader following his resignation.
He said PN secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan has been instructed to notify Dewan Rakyat Speaker Johari Abdul of the vacancy.
Formal Notification Underway
According to Ahmad Samsuri, the official letter confirming the vacancy will be submitted as part of the required administrative process, formally marking the end of Hamzah’s tenure in the role.
He made the remarks during a PAS Johor Aidilfitri open house event in Bukit Pasir, Pagoh.
New Leader to Be Named Before Next Sitting
On the appointment of a new Opposition Leader, Ahmad Samsuri said a successor will be decided before the next Dewan Rakyat session scheduled in June.
He added that discussions are ongoing among PN component parties to identify the most suitable candidate.
“Different leaders may have different preferences, and we will evaluate all views before making a final decision,” he said.
PAS Seen as Potential Candidate
Meanwhile, PAS Johor commissioner Mahfodz Mohamed reportedly suggested that the position should be held by a PAS representative.
He argued that this would be reasonable, as PAS currently holds the largest number of opposition MPs.
Previously, the role had been held by members of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia, including Muhyiddin Yassin.
Deliberations Ongoing
Ahmad Samsuri emphasised that the final decision will be made through collective discussions within PN leadership.
The move aims to ensure that the new Opposition Leader reflects unity and strength within the opposition bloc.
