Fadillah Yusof: Malaysia Expands Energy Diversification to Address Extreme Weather Risks

LUBOK ANTU: The government is stepping up efforts to diversify Malaysia’s energy sources to ensure stable electricity supply amid increasing challenges from extreme weather, said Deputy Prime Minister Fadillah Yusof.

He, who also serves as Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, noted that reliance on hydropower must be reduced as it is highly dependent on rainfall patterns.

Weather Variability Threatens Hydropower

Unpredictable weather conditions can lower reservoir water levels, potentially affecting hydropower generation if sufficient alternative sources are not available, he said.

As a result, the government plans to expand renewable energy sources such as biomass, biofuels, solar and wind energy to create a more balanced energy mix.

Floating Solar Project Strengthens Supply

Fadillah highlighted the 50-megawatt floating hybrid solar project at the Batang Ai Hydroelectric Dam as a key initiative to strengthen energy supply in Sarawak.

The project is expected to complement hydropower generation while stabilising the existing grid.

Integrated Approach Enhances Resilience

He added that integrating hydro and solar technologies can improve renewable energy efficiency and strengthen resilience against global energy market uncertainties.

This strategy is also crucial in meeting rising demand, particularly from high-tech industries.

Collaboration Remains Essential

Fadillah emphasised the importance of strong collaboration between the federal and state governments, as well as utility providers such as Sarawak Energy Berhad, in ensuring the success of national energy strategies.

He said the ability to develop and manage domestic energy resources will be key to Malaysia’s future competitiveness.

On-Ground Monitoring Through PETRA Programme

The PETRA Squad Sarawak programme was conducted to monitor the progress of energy and water projects on the ground and ensure timely implementation for public benefit.
