Sabah Nears Completion of Rail Fare Review, Studies New Putatan–Sepanggar Line

KOTA KINABALU, April 8 — Sabah is nearing the final stage of its railway fare review while simultaneously exploring a proposed new rail route as part of broader efforts to strengthen the state’s public transportation network.

Deputy Chief Minister III and Sabah Industrial Development, Entrepreneurship and Transport Minister Ewon Benedick said the fare review conducted by the Jabatan Keretapi Negeri Sabah is now approximately 90 per cent complete.

He noted that the findings will be submitted to the ministry before being tabled to the State Cabinet for further deliberation and approval.

In parallel, the department is carrying out a feasibility study on a proposed railway line connecting Putatan to Kota Kinabalu, extending to the Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park (KKIP) and Sepanggar Port.

The study, expected to take about 12 months, forms part of a long-term strategy to expand Sabah’s rail network and improve connectivity to key industrial zones and port facilities.

Ewon explained that decisions regarding both the fare revision and the new route proposal will only be made after all studies are completed, ensuring a comprehensive and well-informed approach.

In addition, the Jabatan Keretapi Negeri Sabah is also contributing to the feasibility study of the Trans Borneo Railway project led by the federal government.

Separately, he revealed that his ministry will begin work this year on the Sabah Sustainable Transport Master Plan, with the department playing a role at both policy and technical levels.

The master plan is expected to serve as a key framework in developing a more efficient, integrated and sustainable transportation system for the state.

During the same event, 32 officers and staff members were honoured with Excellent Service Awards in recognition of their performance, while 23 others were acknowledged upon their retirement.

Ewon expressed appreciation to the award recipients, stating that their dedication should serve as an example for other members of the civil service in delivering quality public service.
