Idle Land Transformed Into Profitable Coconut Farms in Bagan Datuk Initiative

BAGAN DATUK — Previously unused land in this district is being revitalised into a productive economic resource through a coconut replanting initiative that is generating income for local communities.

One of the programme participants, Abd. Rahim Jazuli, 47, has taken the lead in cultivating approximately 25 acres of leased land in Kampung Parit 8 Timur, Rungkup Kecil. Since the project began in 2023, around 5,000 coconut trees have been planted, many of which are now starting to bear fruit.

The initiative is supported by the Perak State Agricultural Development Corporation and the Department of Agriculture Malaysia, which provided essential assistance including land clearing, soil preparation, electric fencing, seedlings and fertilisers.

According to Abd. Rahim, the support from these agencies played a crucial role in turning previously neglected land into a viable agricultural venture, enabling sustainable income generation.

Profit-Sharing Model Benefits Landowners

He explained that while many villagers own land, a lack of capital and technical expertise often prevents them from developing it. To address this, a profit-sharing arrangement was introduced.

Under this model, Abd. Rahim manages the farming operations while landowners receive 30 per cent of the returns, with the remaining 70 per cent allocated to the operator.

This approach allows landowners to benefit financially without direct involvement, while ensuring that idle land is put to productive use.

As one of the earliest participants in the programme, Abd. Rahim believes the initiative has the potential to revitalise the coconut industry in Bagan Datuk and reshape the local agricultural landscape.

Encouraging Youth Participation in Agriculture

He also expressed hope that the success of the project will inspire younger generations to explore opportunities in agriculture, particularly in high-potential crops such as coconut.

Abd. Rahim acknowledged the support of Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is also the Member of Parliament for Bagan Datuk, noting that such backing has strengthened confidence among participants.

Aligned with State Development Goals

The programme aligns with the broader objectives of the Perak Sejahtera 2030, which prioritises agriculture, fisheries and livestock as key drivers of economic growth.

It also supports national food security initiatives and entrepreneurship development programmes aimed at empowering communities to generate sustainable income.

Through strategic planning and collaborative efforts, idle land is being transformed into a valuable asset, contributing to both local livelihoods and the wider agricultural economy.
