Uyaina Arshad Drops ‘Urelius’ Baby Name Over Concerns About Social Acceptance

KUALA LUMPUR,  — Television host Uyaina Arshad has revealed that she once considered naming her third child “Urelius,” but ultimately decided against it due to concerns about how the name might be received in a local context.

Uyaina said that while the name carried a meaningful and historical background, she chose to prioritise her child’s social experience, particularly in a school environment where unique names can sometimes attract unwanted attention.

In a social media post, she explained that “Urelius” was inspired by the Latin word “aurelius,” which means gold.

She shared that her interest in the concept of gold during her pregnancy influenced her initial choice.

“I was drawn to the meaning behind the name. It felt strong and meaningful,” she said.

Inspired by History and Symbolism

Uyaina also noted that the name was influenced by the historical figure Marcus Aurelius, a Roman emperor known for his leadership and philosophical legacy.

She said the combination of symbolic meaning and historical reference made the name appealing and distinctive.

The name was also considered in relation to her other children’s names, which carry their own unique themes and identities.

“It had a strong identity and aligned with the style of names I prefer,” she said.

Concerns Over Social Environment

Despite its appeal, Uyaina said she became concerned about how the name might be perceived in Malaysia, especially among school-aged children.

She worried that a name perceived as unusual could lead to teasing, which might affect her child’s confidence.

“I started thinking about how children might react. Kids can be quick to point out differences,” she said.

She added that such experiences can have lasting emotional effects.

Personal Experience Influenced Decision

Uyaina reflected on her own childhood, recalling how she was teased because of her name, which others found unfamiliar.

She said the experience made her uncomfortable and even led her to use her middle name during her school years.

“I know how it feels to be teased over something like that. It stays with you,” she said.

This personal experience played a significant role in her decision to reconsider the name.

Embracing Identity Over Time

Despite her past challenges, Uyaina said her perspective changed as she grew older.

During her university years, she began to appreciate the uniqueness of her name and embraced it as part of her identity.

“Over time, I realised that having a unique name is something to be proud of,” she said.

Today, she values individuality but also recognises the importance of balancing uniqueness with practicality.

Her decision reflects a thoughtful approach to parenting, taking into account both personal values and the realities of social acceptance.
