Shareholding Row: PN MPs Urge Azam Baki to Step Aside to Protect MACC’s Credibility
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 12 — The controversy surrounding Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki’s shareholdings intensified today as several Perikatan Nasional (PN) lawmakers called for his resignation.
Masjid Tanah MP Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin said the issue goes beyond regulatory compliance and touches on public confidence in the country’s primary anti-corruption body.
She argued that any doubts surrounding the leadership of MACC must be addressed decisively to prevent erosion of institutional credibility.
“When it concerns the head of the anti-corruption agency, this cannot be dismissed as a minor matter. Institutional integrity must take precedence over individual defence,” she told reporters outside the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex.
Mas Ermieyati also questioned Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s remarks perceived as supportive of Azam, saying the matter warrants fuller clarification.
She further raised concerns about Azam’s explanation that the shares were sold in July last year.
“Even if the shares were disposed of, the period of ownership still raises legitimate questions. Could there have been a conflict of interest? Clear and comprehensive answers are required,” she said.
Proposal for Temporary Step-Aside
Meanwhile, Hulu Terengganu MP Datuk Rosol Wahid stressed that the government must demonstrate an uncompromising stance against corruption.
He suggested that Azam take temporary leave to allow an impartial investigation to proceed without any perception of interference.
“When allegations involve the highest leadership of an enforcement body, a temporary step-aside is reasonable to safeguard the integrity of the process,” he said.
Azam has maintained that his shareholdings were properly declared in accordance with public service regulations and did not contravene any rules.
