Activists File MACC Report Alleging Misconduct by Senior Public University Official

PUTRAJAYA, Feb 12 — A group of activists has lodged a formal complaint with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), alleging abuse of power and possible mismanagement involving a top management official at a public university in Melaka.

National Secretariat of Aktivis Pembela Tanah Air (Peta) and Peta Melaka chairman Mohd. Zamri Abu Bakar said the move followed a month-long review of documents and information obtained from various sources.

He said the materials were consolidated into a comprehensive submission before being handed over to MACC for further action.

“We are not drawing conclusions. The documents we received raise serious questions, and it is appropriate for the authorities to investigate,” he told reporters outside MACC headquarters today.

Allegations Span Payments, Contracts and Appointments

According to Mohd. Zamri, the report highlights claims of repeated payments to the same individual for various purposes, allegedly amounting to tens or even hundreds of thousands of ringgit.

The activists also questioned the use of university funds for external legal services said to involve personal interests, as well as contractor appointments through quotation processes allegedly linked to individuals with family connections to senior administrators.

Other concerns raised include administrative appointments that may not have complied with established service scheme requirements, and financial management issues involving a university-related entity reportedly incurring losses despite receiving substantial funding.

The report further touches on alleged issues surrounding the quality and management of certain academic programmes, including doctoral-level studies.

Call for Institutional Accountability

In addition to governance and financial matters, the activists cited environmental concerns, including claims that foreign fish species were introduced into a university lake without comprehensive assessment, potentially affecting the local ecosystem.

Mohd. Zamri stressed that the purpose of the report was to allow authorities to independently verify the allegations.

“The integrity of public higher education institutions must be safeguarded. We leave it to MACC to investigate,” he said.

At the time of publication, neither the university nor the individual named had issued a public response to the allegations.
