Give Him Space to Work: FAM Backs Ong Kim Swee to Lead Bold NFDP Reforms

The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) has called for full backing and trust to be given to Datuk Ong Kim Swee as he takes charge of the National Football Development Programme (NFDP), insisting that meaningful progress can only happen if he is allowed to work freely.

FAM acting president Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mahadi said Ong needs full authority to restructure the programme, including reviewing the existing coaching framework, identifying suitable replacements where necessary and designing development modules that better reflect current football realities.

He emphasised that leadership requires flexibility and autonomy. “If he is bound by too many restrictions, it will make things difficult for him. Since he has been appointed, we must allow him to structure the coaching team and syllabus according to what he feels is best. Creativity and freedom are crucial,” he said.

Mohd Yusoff also noted that Ong must be supported by individuals he trusts and who share his philosophy in nurturing young talent. Without that, reform efforts are likely to face obstacles.

Ong’s appointment, which took effect on December 1, marks his return to a familiar role. The former Sabah FC head coach is no stranger to the national football development scene, having previously served as a key figure in shaping young talent, including his role with the Harimau Muda squad and a stint as national team head coach.

Despite his credentials, the announcement has generated concern among some existing NFDP coaches, especially after Ong acknowledged the need to evaluate whether the current coaching staff remain relevant. Some parties were reportedly unhappy and expressed criticism.

FAM, however, views such resistance as part of a normal transition process when reforms are introduced. What matters most, they said, is ensuring that the NFDP remains sustainable and capable of producing higher-quality players.

They believe the programme needs a fresh spark, clear direction and a strong leader — all of which Ong represents. With full support, they are confident that the NFDP can once again function as a primary pipeline for the nation’s football future.
