Malaysia’s Jimmy Wong-Cheng Su Yin continue dream run with stunning Japan Open semi-final breakthrough

PETALING JAYA: Malaysian mixed doubles pair Jimmy Wong and Cheng Su Yin continued one of the biggest stories of the Japan Open 2026 after producing another upset to reach the semi-finals of the BWF Super 750 tournament in Tokyo.

The world No. 118 duo defeated Denmark’s world No. 3 pairing Mathias Christiansen and Alexandra Boje in straight games, extending their remarkable giant-killing run in a tournament where they have consistently outperformed higher-ranked opponents.

Jimmy and Su Yin secured an impressive 21-17, 21-17 victory in just 39 minutes, showcasing disciplined defence and composed attacking play to eliminate one of the tournament favourites.

The victory also levelled their head-to-head record against the experienced Danish pair at 1-1, an encouraging milestone for the Malaysian partnership that was only formed in May this year.

Speaking after the match, Jimmy described the result as one of the most satisfying moments since the pair began competing together.

He acknowledged the significant gap in world rankings and experience but said they entered the match with the mindset of staying patient, limiting mistakes and taking every opportunity that came their way.

Rather than attempting to overpower their opponents, Jimmy said the strategy centred on maintaining composure throughout the rally and avoiding unnecessary risks against one of the world’s top mixed doubles combinations.

Su Yin admitted she had not expected the pair to overcome the Danish duo, saying their primary objective before stepping onto court was simply to produce their best performance regardless of the outcome.

She credited their growing understanding on court for helping them compete confidently against more established partnerships.

Their latest success marks the third major upset of the tournament and continues an extraordinary campaign that has exceeded expectations.

Before defeating Christiansen and Boje, the Malaysians had already eliminated Japan’s world No. 14 pair Yuichi Shimogami and Sayaka Hobara, followed by another impressive victory over world No. 7 French combination Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue.

The win over the Danish pair carried additional significance, ending Christiansen and Boje’s hopes of completing a hat-trick of BWF World Tour titles after triumphing at both the Singapore Open and Indonesia Open.

Having already eliminated three higher-ranked opponents, Jimmy and Su Yin have emerged as one of the surprise packages of this year’s tournament despite entering the competition with relatively little international experience as a partnership.

Awaiting the Malaysians in Saturday’s semi-final will be Hong Kong’s world No. 8 pair Tang Chun Man and Tse Ying Suet.

The meeting will mark the first encounter between the two partnerships and promises to be another stern examination for the Malaysian duo as they pursue an unlikely place in the final.

Tang and Tse also advanced after producing a major upset of their own, defeating China’s world No. 2 combination Jiang Zhen Bang and Wei Ya Xin 21-17, 21-13 in another 39-minute contest.

With confidence growing after a string of victories over some of the world’s leading mixed doubles teams, Jimmy and Su Yin have already exceeded expectations in Tokyo and now stand just one win away from reaching the biggest final of their young partnership.
