Hyundai broadens marine sustainability efforts with expanded global partnership to protect ocean ecosystems

SEOUL: Hyundai Motor Company is reinforcing its environmental sustainability agenda by expanding its collaboration with international marine conservation organisation Healthy Seas, introducing new initiatives in the United States that combine ocean clean-up operations, environmental education and circular economy practices.

The enhanced partnership reflects Hyundai’s continued investment in projects that address marine pollution while encouraging greater community participation in environmental conservation.

Originally launched in 2021, the global collaboration has steadily expanded from Europe to Asia and North America, supporting large-scale efforts to remove abandoned fishing equipment and other marine debris from coastal and underwater environments.

According to Hyundai, the programme has helped recover more than 320 tonnes of marine litter across 10 countries, demonstrating how long-term partnerships between businesses and non-profit organisations can contribute to environmental restoration.

The latest phase introduces the “From Sea to Shore” programme in Southern California, bringing together three interconnected initiatives designed to improve ocean health while increasing public awareness of marine conservation.

A central component of the programme involves underwater recovery missions carried out by Ghost Diving USA, where volunteer divers retrieve abandoned fishing nets and debris from the seabed around Catalina Island.

Often referred to as ghost nets, discarded fishing gear continues trapping marine animals long after being abandoned, making it one of the most persistent forms of ocean pollution affecting biodiversity worldwide.

By removing these hazards, the programme aims to reduce threats to marine life while restoring damaged underwater habitats.

Hyundai has also expanded employee participation in environmental conservation through organised beach restoration activities at Huntington State Beach, where staff members work alongside environmental volunteers to remove litter and help preserve California’s coastline.

The company said involving employees directly in conservation projects strengthens environmental awareness while encouraging a culture of sustainability within the organisation.

Beyond physical clean-up activities, the initiative places significant emphasis on educating younger generations about protecting marine ecosystems.

Through Hyundai’s corporate social responsibility platform, Hyundai Hope, educational workshops have been introduced for children attending the Boys & Girls Club of Huntington Valley.

The interactive sessions explore the impact of marine pollution, explain how discarded fishing gear threatens wildlife and encourage participants to adopt environmentally responsible habits in their daily lives.

Hyundai believes combining education with conservation activities creates longer-lasting environmental benefits by empowering young people to become advocates for ocean protection within their families and communities.

Another key aspect of the programme focuses on resource recovery and material reuse.

Fishing nets and other suitable nylon waste collected during recovery operations are regenerated into ECONYL® yarn, allowing discarded marine materials to be converted into raw materials for new products instead of becoming permanent ocean waste.

The recycling process supports Hyundai’s broader circular economy strategy by reducing landfill waste, lowering demand for newly produced materials and extending the useful life of recovered resources.

Hyundai Motor North America President and Chief Executive Officer Randy Parker said meaningful environmental progress requires practical action that not only removes pollution but also creates sustainable solutions capable of delivering long-term ecological benefits.

Meanwhile, Healthy Seas Director Veronika Mikos said the expanded partnership demonstrates how environmental restoration, education and community engagement can complement one another to build lasting awareness and encourage broader public participation in marine conservation.

The Healthy Seas programme forms part of Hyundai’s wider sustainability strategy, which also includes global tree-planting initiatives such as IONIQ Forest and collaborations with environmental organisations including One Tree Planted.

Through these programmes, Hyundai continues to pursue its “Progress for Humanity” vision by supporting projects that protect biodiversity, promote responsible resource management and encourage collective action towards a more sustainable future.
