Hasnul Zulkarnain Returns to Amanah After Six Years, Says Focus Is on Rebuilding Trust

IPOH: Former Titi Serong assemblyman Hasnul Zulkarnain Abd Munaim has officially returned to Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) after six years away from the party, marking a new chapter in a political career that has seen several significant turns over the past decade.

The announcement was made by Amanah Perak chairman Datuk Asmuni Awi during the Amanah Tambun Division Annual Meeting 2026 held here today.

Hasnul’s return is seen as an important development for the party in Perak, especially as Amanah seeks to strengthen its grassroots machinery and prepare for future political challenges.

Speaking to reporters after the announcement, Hasnul said his decision to return to Amanah was not made overnight.

Instead, he said it was the result of careful consideration and reflection on his political journey as well as his long-standing relationship with the party.

“I submitted my application to rejoin Amanah last year and I am grateful that Datuk Asmuni supported my return.

“My name was later brought to the Amanah National Management and Leadership Meeting on June 18, and the party’s national leadership committee approved my membership in principle,” he said.

Hasnul described the decision by Amanah to accept him back as a sign of trust and confidence in his ability to contribute once again to the party.

According to him, the close ties he built with party members since Amanah’s early days played a major role in his decision to return.

“I grew politically in Amanah and I was among those involved in the party from the beginning.

“My spirit and political ideals have always remained close to Amanah because this is where my comrades and friends are,” he said.

Hasnul added that despite the ups and downs he has experienced in politics, he believes Amanah remains the best platform for him to continue serving the people.

He said he intends to use the experience he has gained over the years to strengthen the party and help expand its influence, particularly in Perak.

“I want to work alongside my old friends again and contribute as much as I can.

“Being accepted back comes with a responsibility, and I want to repay the trust shown to me by working harder for the party,” he said.

When asked whether he plans to contest in the 16th General Election (GE16), Hasnul dismissed the idea and insisted that he has no personal political ambitions at the moment.

He said his immediate priority is to help strengthen the party organisation and support the existing leadership.

“I have no intention of contesting.

“My focus now is to contribute to the party and rebuild the trust that has been placed in me,” he said.

Hasnul was once regarded as one of Amanah’s rising young leaders in Perak.

However, in March 2020, he shocked many political observers when he announced his departure from Amanah together with two DAP assemblymen following the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan government in Perak amid the formation of the Perikatan Nasional administration.

The move sparked intense debate as Hasnul had been considered one of Amanah’s prominent young figures with strong grassroots support.

Several months later, on July 29, 2020, he joined Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu).

His stint with Bersatu, however, proved to be short-lived.

He was expelled from the party in December that same year, reportedly after supporting Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad of UMNO to become the new Menteri Besar of Perak instead of Bersatu deputy president Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu.

Now, six years after leaving Amanah, Hasnul has returned to the party where his political journey began, hoping to contribute to its future growth and help strengthen its position in Malaysia’s evolving political landscape.
