Sabah Allocates RM559.85 Million to Strengthen Food Resilience and Agricultural Growth

PAPAR, May 1 — The Sabah state government has allocated RM559.85 million to the agri-food sector this year as part of a broader strategy to strengthen food security and expand sustainable local production capacity.

Chief Minister Hajiji Noor said the funding, channelled through the Sabah Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry, will support initiatives aimed at improving the state’s Self-Sufficiency Ratio (SSR) and reducing reliance on imported food supplies.

He emphasised that building a resilient food system is critical to safeguarding economic stability and public well-being, especially amid global economic uncertainty and geopolitical challenges.

“The ability to produce our own food is fundamental to long-term stability and resilience,” he said during the launch of the state-level Kaamatan Festival in Papar.

Among the key initiatives highlighted were the establishment of the Sabah Paddy and Rice Board and the development of paddy cultivation areas across strategic locations in the state.

These efforts are designed to enhance domestic rice production capacity while strengthening the overall food supply chain.

At the same time, agriculture continues to play a central role in Sabah’s development strategy under the Sabah Maju Jaya 2.0.

Hajiji noted that investment in the sector not only ensures food availability but also drives rural development and improves farmers’ incomes.

He also encouraged the public to support locally produced goods as part of efforts to strengthen the domestic economy.

“Consumer support for local products is vital to sustaining the agricultural sector,” he said.

In addition, he stressed that the success of Sabah’s development agenda depends on strong collaboration between the government, industry players and the wider community.

He highlighted unity among Sabah’s diverse population as a key factor in achieving long-term development goals.

The selection of Papar as the venue for this year’s Kaamatan Festival launch was described as symbolic of its importance as a key agricultural hub.

Beyond its role in food production, Papar also reflects the cultural diversity and social harmony that define Sabah.

The significant allocation is expected to contribute to the long-term strengthening of Sabah’s food system, ensuring a stable and sufficient supply for future generations.
