Zakat Fund Probe: MAINPP President Pledges Full Cooperation with MACC Investigation
KEPALA BATAS — The president of the Majlis Agama Islam Negeri Pulau Pinang (MAINPP), Mohamad Abdul Hamid, has reaffirmed his readiness to testify before the Suruhanjaya Pencegahan Rasuah Malaysia (MACC) as part of its investigation into alleged misuse of zakat funds in Penang.
Mohamad, who also serves as the state’s Deputy Chief Minister I, said MAINPP and Zakat MAINPP have been cooperating fully with investigators by submitting financial records, administrative documents and other relevant materials.
He stressed that the council takes the allegations seriously, as they involve public trust and the welfare of Muslim communities.
“Several officers have already been called in for questioning. Although I have yet to be summoned, I am fully prepared to assist the MACC whenever required to ensure a transparent and fair investigation,” he told reporters.
He was speaking after attending a state zakat certification and Ramadan contribution ceremony.
Mohamad said MAINPP remains committed to upholding high standards of governance and integrity in managing zakat funds, which are meant to support underprivileged groups and community development.
“Our priority is to ensure that every ringgit is managed responsibly and in accordance with established regulations. Any allegation of wrongdoing must be investigated thoroughly,” he said.
The MACC probe reportedly involves allegations against a senior state official over the use of zakat funds for land purchases.
Earlier reports indicated that investigators had opened a formal case file and conducted inspections at several offices believed to be linked to the matter.
Mohamad also cautioned against politicising the issue or spreading unverified claims, warning that such actions could undermine public confidence in religious institutions.
“We respect the investigative process and will allow the MACC to carry out its duties independently. Transparency and accountability are essential in restoring public trust,” he added.
Previously, Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the state government would not interfere with the investigation and would provide full cooperation.
He also noted that no internal inquiry would be initiated while the MACC’s probe remains ongoing.
Observers believe the investigation represents a crucial step toward strengthening governance standards in zakat fund management and reinforcing public confidence in Islamic institutions and state administration.
