Two Arrested by MACC in RM1 Million Bribery Attempt Linked to Sand Supplier Case
KUALA LUMPUR — The Suruhanjaya Pencegahan Rasuah Malaysia (MACC) has detained two men in Penang over a suspected RM1 million bribery attempt aimed at halting action on a corruption case involving a sand supplier.
The suspects, both in their 50s, were arrested in separate operations — one at a restaurant and the other at the MACC state office.
According to sources, the primary suspect, an unemployed man, is believed to have orchestrated the scheme, while the second suspect is a managing director of a sand supply company.
The pair are said to have solicited the bribe last month as an inducement to suppress a corruption complaint linked to the firm.
In a targeted sting operation conducted by the MACC Intelligence Division, the main suspect was apprehended while receiving three cheques totalling RM1 million at a restaurant.
Initial investigations also indicate that the suspect may have issued threats to lodge a report if the payment was not made.
Authorities seized the cheques along with four mobile phones during the operation to aid further investigations.
All suspects have been detained as investigations proceed under the MACC Act 2009.
MACC Deputy Chief Commissioner (Operations) Ahmad Khusairi Yahaya confirmed the arrests, adding that statements from at least one witness have already been recorded.
The case highlights ongoing enforcement efforts by the Suruhanjaya Pencegahan Rasuah Malaysia to crack down on corruption and uphold accountability.
