TNB Warns Public Against Fake Phone Calls as Telephone Scam Cases Rise

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 1, 2026Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) has urged customers and the public to remain vigilant against suspicious phone calls impersonating the utility company, following a rise in telephone scam cases.

In a statement, TNB said the warning was issued after receiving reports of individuals being deceived by callers posing as company representatives.

Through its official TNB CareLine Facebook page, the company expressed sympathy for victims of recent scams in Terengganu and confirmed that it is reviewing the matter in cooperation with the authorities.

“TNB is aware of the incident and is currently examining relevant information before working closely with enforcement agencies for further investigation,” the statement said.

The company reminded the public not to disclose personal information such as identity card numbers, addresses, account details, or financial data over the phone without proper verification.

As a safety measure, customers who receive suspicious calls are advised to contact the official TNB CareLine at 1300-88-5454 to verify the authenticity of the call.

Earlier, a 71-year-old retired civil servant from Batu Rakit, Kuala Nerus, Terengganu reportedly lost RM50,000 after falling victim to a telephone scam.

Kuala Terengganu district police chief Azli Mohd Noor said the victim received a call on January 29 from a suspect impersonating a TNB officer.

The caller claimed that the victim’s identity had been used to register a modified electricity meter for illegal power theft activities in Pahang, before transferring the call to an accomplice posing as a police officer.

Fearing legal consequences, the victim transferred money to five different bank accounts as instructed, only to realise later that she had been scammed when the suspects became unreachable.

Police have advised the public to exercise greater caution and to report any suspicious calls immediately to prevent further losses.
