Segamat Crash: Loke Orders Full Audit of Trailer Company, Calls for Strict Accountability

Authorities to review company compliance and safety practices

JOHOR BAHRU: Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook has ordered a comprehensive audit and investigation into the trailer company involved in a fatal crash in Segamat that claimed three lives.

He said the Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan (JPJ) and Agensi Pengangkutan Awam Darat have been tasked with assessing the company’s compliance, particularly its oversight of drivers and adherence to safety standards.

Loke stressed that any negligence must be addressed firmly, including holding the company accountable if lapses are identified.

Drug-positive driver raises safety concerns

The minister revealed that the trailer driver tested positive for methamphetamine, highlighting serious concerns about driver monitoring and safety enforcement.

He urged the police to expedite investigations so that legal action can proceed swiftly, adding that prosecutors are expected to pursue appropriate charges in line with the severity of the case.

Details of the fatal incident

The crash occurred on April 2 at the Taman Golden Hill junction in Gemas Baharu, involving three vehicles.

A trailer reportedly collided with the rear of a van carrying a family of five, causing it to lose control and enter the opposite lane, where it was struck by a 10-tonne lorry.

The accident resulted in three fatalities, including a husband and wife, while two other victims remain hospitalised, one in critical condition in the intensive care unit.

Loke also visited the victims’ families at Hospital Segamat and provided personal financial assistance to support them during this difficult time.

Renewed focus on road safety enforcement

Describing the case as a preventable tragedy linked to drug abuse, Loke said the government remains committed to strengthening road safety enforcement.

While acknowledging that most lorry drivers act responsibly, he warned that strict action will be taken against those who endanger lives.

He also urged all drivers to prioritise safety and avoid risky behaviour that could lead to further loss of life.
