Raja of Perlis Urges Muslims to Strengthen Adherence to Sunnah for Moral and Social Development
KANGAR: The Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail, has called on Muslims to strengthen their understanding and adherence to the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as a fundamental source of guidance in daily life.
He said the Sunnah plays a crucial role not only in religious practices but also in shaping individual character, strengthening social harmony and building a resilient civilisation based on strong moral and ethical values.
“The Sunnah shapes individuals who build communities and nurture strong, resilient civilisations,” he said when officiating the closing ceremony of the Third Series of the Perlis International Sunnah Convention (PISC) 2026 at Dewan 2020 here.
The event was also attended by the Raja Muda of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail, and the Raja Puan Muda, Tuanku Dr. Hajah Lailatul Shahreen Akashah Khalil.
Distinguishing Authentic Practices from Tradition
In his address, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin emphasised the importance of guiding Muslims to distinguish between authentic religious practices and traditions influenced by cultural assumptions without proper Islamic foundations.
He said Islam provides a clear and systematic framework through the Quran and Sunnah, which should serve as the primary reference in religious matters.
“Practices that lack authentic foundations, even if they appear good on the surface, may lead to confusion if not examined with knowledge and wisdom,” he said.
He added that cultural traditions may continue to be practised as long as they do not contradict Islamic principles.
Sunnah in the Modern Context
The Raja of Perlis noted that adherence to the Sunnah is increasingly important in addressing contemporary challenges, including moral, social and technological issues.
He said the Sunnah offers comprehensive guidance that promotes moderation, responsibility and integrity.
“By holding firmly to the Sunnah, Muslims can adapt to modern changes without compromising their religious principles,” he said.
He also stressed that proper understanding of the Sunnah can strengthen unity and prevent divisions caused by misinterpretation.
Platform for Knowledge Exchange
Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin expressed appreciation to the organisers, speakers and participants for making the convention a success.
He said PISC served not only as an academic gathering but also as a valuable platform for exchanging ideas, expertise and perspectives among scholars and religious leaders.
The strong participation from local and international delegates reflected growing awareness of the importance of authentic Sunnah-based understanding, he added.
“This gathering promotes intellectual networking and encourages dialogue based on sound evidence and scholarship,” he said.
Strengthening Islamic Education
The Raja also urged continued efforts to reinforce Sunnah-based education through formal and informal channels, including schools, universities and religious institutions.
He stressed the need for balanced education that integrates knowledge, ethics and practice to develop holistic Muslim personalities.
“Knowledge without application brings little benefit. Knowledge practised sincerely builds a harmonious society,” he said.
He expressed hope that conventions such as PISC would continue to be organised regularly to strengthen Islamic understanding and nurture communities grounded in the teachings of the Prophet.
He added that sustained commitment from scholars, institutions and society is essential in ensuring that the Sunnah remains a guiding force in shaping future generations.
