Police Seek Extended Remand for Three Suspects Over Offensive Remarks on Religion and Royalty

JOHOR BAHRU, April 2 — Johor police are seeking to extend the remand of three individuals detained for allegedly posting inflammatory content insulting Islam and the royal institution, as investigations into the case continue.

Johor police chief Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad said the suspects, aged between 17 and 49, have been under remand since March 31, with the current detention period set to expire tomorrow.

He explained that additional time is required to complete investigations, including gathering evidence and examining all relevant aspects of the case.

“We will apply for an extension of the remand to ensure that our investigation is thorough and complete,” he said during a press conference at the Johor police headquarters.

Multiple Legal Provisions Invoked

Ab Rahaman said the case is being investigated under several laws, including the Sedition Act 1948, the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, and provisions under the Penal Code.

He stressed that the case is being treated seriously due to its sensitive nature, as it involves matters related to religion and the monarchy, both of which are deeply significant in Malaysia.

“These are sensitive issues that could affect public harmony if not handled properly,” he said.

He added that the investigation will be conducted in accordance with established legal procedures to ensure fairness and transparency.

Arrests Linked to Social Media Content

The suspects were detained following the circulation of social media posts that allegedly contained offensive and provocative statements.

The content was said to have touched on issues involving Islam, the royal institution, and national leadership, prompting public concern and reactions.

Police acted swiftly to detain the individuals to prevent further dissemination of the material and potential escalation of tensions.

“The arrests were made to assist investigations and to prevent any further negative impact on society,” he said.

Mental Health Status Yet to Be Determined

On the suspects’ mental condition, Ab Rahaman said that police have not confirmed any details at this stage.

He noted that any decision regarding psychiatric evaluation will depend on the court’s direction.

“This is a matter for the court to decide. Our role is to investigate based on the available facts,” he said.

He also revealed that the suspects are currently unemployed, while the teenage suspect is not attending school.

Firm Action Against Sensitive Offences

Ab Rahaman reiterated that police will take firm action against any offences involving sensitive matters such as religion and the monarchy.

He said such cases must be handled decisively to preserve social harmony and national stability.

“Any act that threatens public peace and unity will be dealt with firmly under the law,” he said.

The case is expected to remain under close public scrutiny, given its implications for social cohesion and the importance of maintaining respect for key national institutions.
