Nancy Shukri Warns Public Against Scams Claiming Fees for Welfare Homes

KUCHING, Feb 8 — Women, Family and Community Development Minister Nancy Shukri has cautioned the public against falling for scams involving fake welfare homes that claim payments are required for admission.

She said there has been a rise in misleading advertisements and messages targeting vulnerable individuals, falsely stating that fees must be paid to secure placement in welfare facilities.

Nancy stressed that welfare homes operated by the government do not impose any charges on residents.

“There are eligibility requirements that must be met, but payment is not one of them. Any claim that fees are required should immediately raise red flags,” she said while speaking at the launch of the Sarawak Indian Woman Association website here today.

She added that scammers often rely on fear and urgency to pressure people into making payments, particularly those in desperate situations seeking shelter or assistance.

Nancy expressed concern over the growing number of such cases and said the issue must be taken seriously, as it involves exploitation of individuals who are already facing hardship.

While she is able to verify information through official government channels and inter-ministerial consultations, she noted that the general public may not have the same access.

As such, she urged members of the public to confirm information through official government sources and to report suspicious advertisements, messages or individuals to the authorities to prevent further victims.
