MG Motor Malaysia Launches Locally Assembled MGS5 EV to Accelerate EV Expansion

PETALING JAYA, April 25 — MG Motor Malaysia has unveiled the locally assembled MGS5 EV, marking a significant step in its push to expand its footprint in Malaysia’s electric vehicle market.

The launch follows the successful rollout of its first CKD unit in Melaka earlier this year, reinforcing its commitment to local assembly operations.

Strategic Move to Strengthen EV Presence

The introduction of the MGS5 EV reflects MG’s broader strategy to capture a larger share of the growing EV segment, driven by rising consumer demand for sustainable mobility solutions.

The model combines performance, technology and practicality to meet evolving market expectations.

Fast Charging and Extended Driving Range

The vehicle supports DC fast charging of up to 150kW, enabling the battery to recharge from 10 to 80 per cent in approximately 26 minutes.

With a driving range of up to 446km (WLTP), it is positioned as a versatile option for both urban commuting and longer-distance travel.

Its ultra-thin battery layout enhances interior space while contributing to improved vehicle stability.

Premium Variant Adds Comfort and Convenience

The LUX Long Range variant includes premium features such as synthetic leather seats, ventilated front seating, power-adjustable passenger seats and a hands-free powered tailgate.

These enhancements aim to deliver a more refined and comfortable driving experience.

Advanced Safety and High Ratings

Safety features include seven airbags and the ADAS 2.5 system, offering intelligent functions such as adaptive cruise control and traffic assistance.

The MGS5 EV has also secured five-star safety ratings from Euro NCAP and ASEAN NCAP.

Extended Warranty Boosts Buyer Confidence

To strengthen consumer confidence, the model comes with an eight-year or 180,000km battery warranty, along with an eight-year or 160,000km warranty for the motor control unit.

Local Assembly Supports Industry Growth

Managing Director of SAIC Motor Malaysia, Emory Qi, highlighted that the vehicle is assembled at the PEPS-JV facility in Melaka in collaboration with EP Manufacturing Berhad.

He noted that the initiative supports local supply chains, technology transfer and broader industry development.

The Pegoh facility is capable of producing multiple vehicle types, with monthly output for the MGS5 EV estimated at 120 to 180 units.

Bookings Open With Promotional Incentives

Bookings for the MGS5 EV are now open, with prices starting from RM116,900 for the LUX Long Range variant.

To mark the launch, MG Motor Malaysia is offering promotional packages valued at up to RM9,000.
