KPDN Calls in 10 Major Firms to Justify Price Hikes Amid Energy Crisis Concerns
PUTRAJAYA, April 25 — The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living has summoned at least 10 major companies to explain recent price increases, as authorities investigate potential profiteering linked to the global energy crisis.
Enforcement chief Azman Adam said the move followed public complaints and ongoing monitoring of market price trends.
Notices Issued Under Special Monitoring Operation
All companies involved have been served notices under Op Kesan, a targeted initiative designed to track and evaluate pricing practices.
They are required to appear before authorities and submit detailed documentation outlining cost structures and reasons behind the price adjustments.
Global Pressures Cited but Scrutiny Intensifies
Azman noted that geopolitical tensions in West Asia have disrupted supply chains and driven up production and logistics costs.
However, he stressed that companies must provide valid justification for any price increases and cannot exploit the situation for excessive profit.
Company Identities Withheld During Review
The ministry has yet to disclose the names of the companies, as the investigation remains at a preliminary stage.
Authorities are currently analysing submitted information before deciding whether to escalate the matter into formal cases.
Enforcement Action to Follow if Violations Found
If evidence of profiteering is confirmed, formal investigations will be initiated and enforcement action taken.
Azman emphasised that each case will undergo detailed scrutiny to ensure fair and accurate outcomes.
Ongoing Monitoring Reflects Regulatory Vigilance
In 2025, authorities recorded 131 profiteering cases, while 19 cases have been identified so far in 2026, involving compounds totalling RM142,000.
KPDN said it will continue to strengthen enforcement efforts to maintain fair pricing and protect consumer interests.
