HORSENS, April 24 — Malaysia’s badminton squad has been called on to stay mentally strong and embrace the pressure as they begin their Thomas and Uber Cup 2026 journey, with national singles coaching director Kenneth Jonassen stressing the importance of mindset.

He highlighted that handling pressure and maintaining composure will be crucial factors in determining how far the team can go in the prestigious team tournament.

Opening Matches Set the Tone

Jonassen noted that the first matches for both the men’s and women’s teams at Forum Horsens will play a key role in shaping the campaign.

A strong start, he said, can build confidence and momentum, while also helping players settle into the high-intensity environment of team competition.

He acknowledged that opponents will apply significant pressure, but believes Malaysia has the quality to respond effectively.

Encouraging Preparation Ahead of Tournament

The Danish coach pointed to the positive energy and commitment shown by players during their recent training camp in Herning, describing it as a strong foundation heading into the tournament.

He expressed confidence that the team is well-prepared to meet the challenges ahead.

Group B Challenges Await

Malaysia, a five-time Thomas Cup champion, will open their Group B campaign against England.

Meanwhile, the women’s team will face Turkiye in their opening Uber Cup match, providing an early test of their readiness and resilience.

Rexy Stresses Readiness Across Entire Squad

National doubles coaching director Rexy Mainaky emphasised that every player must be prepared to contribute when called upon.

He noted that team events require all squad members to remain focused and ready, especially in high-pressure situations.

Aim for Strong Opening to Boost Progress

The Thomas and Uber Cup Finals, running until May 3, feature top badminton nations from around the world.

Malaysia will be aiming for a strong opening performance to build momentum and improve their chances of advancing deeper into the competition.
