KUALA LUMPUR, April 6 — The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a nationwide thunderstorm warning, with heavy rain and strong winds expected to affect multiple regions until 5pm today.
In its latest advisory, the agency said unstable weather conditions are forecast across large parts of Peninsular Malaysia as well as Sabah and Sarawak, raising concerns over potential flash floods and disruptions to daily routines.
In the northern region, the entire state of Perlis is affected, while Kedah faces widespread impact across districts such as Kubang Pasu, Kota Setar, Pokok Sena, Padang Terap, Yan, Pendang, Kuala Muda, Sik, Baling, Kulim, and Bandar Baharu.
Penang’s warning covers Seberang Perai Utara, Tengah, and Selatan, while Perak includes areas such as Larut, Matang and Selama, Hulu Perak, Kuala Kangsar, Kinta, Kampar, Bagan Datuk, Hilir Perak, Batang Padang, and Muallim.
On the east coast, Terengganu’s affected areas include Besut, Setiu, and Hulu Terengganu, while in Pahang, warnings extend to Cameron Highlands, Lipis, Raub, Jerantut, and Bentong.
Selangor’s Sabak Bernam and Hulu Selangor are also under alert, alongside Jelebu and Jempol in Negeri Sembilan.
In East Malaysia, Sarawak sees extensive coverage including Kuching, Serian, Samarahan, Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei, Mukah, Kapit, Bintulu, and Limbang.
Sabah’s affected areas include Beaufort in the interior, as well as west coast districts such as Kota Kinabalu, Penampang, Putatan, Papar, Tuaran, and Kota Belud, along with Tawau.
MetMalaysia said such warnings are issued when rainfall intensity exceeds 20mm per hour, either imminent or expected to persist for more than an hour.
These alerts are short-term and valid for up to six hours per issuance, though conditions may change rapidly depending on atmospheric developments.
The public is advised to stay alert, especially those in flood-prone areas or commuting during peak hours, and to monitor official updates for the latest information.
