Karam Singh Walia Cremated in Klang, Veteran Journalist Leaves Lasting Environmental Legacy
KLANG, April 6 — Veteran broadcast journalist Karam Singh Walia was laid to rest in a cremation ceremony held at the Simpang Lima Crematorium this afternoon, attended by family members and close associates in a sombre setting.
His remains were transported from his residence in Taman Sri Andalas at around 3.15pm, arriving at the crematorium approximately 20 minutes later. The ceremony lasted about half an hour and proceeded in a calm and respectful atmosphere.
Prominent figures from the media industry were present to pay their last respects, reflecting the significant role Karam Singh played throughout his career. Among those in attendance were Media Prima Berhad Group chairman Datuk Seri Dr. Syed Hussian Syed Junid, On-Air Presentation general manager Kamaruddin Mape, and deputy managing editor of News and Current Affairs Farrah Naz Abd Karim.
Karam Singh, 67, passed away earlier in the day at his residence, as confirmed by his younger brother Jasbant Singh, who also serves as Group Managing Editor of News and Current Affairs at Media Prima Berhad.
Born in Teluk Intan in 1959 into a Punjabi Sikh family, he grew up in an environment influenced by public service. He later entered the broadcasting field when he joined TV3 in 1995.
Throughout his career, he became widely known for his strong advocacy in environmental journalism, producing reports that not only informed but also raised awareness about environmental protection.
His contributions earned him multiple accolades, including the Anugerah Seri Angkasa and the MPI Award for Best Environmental Television Journalist for four consecutive years from 2004 to 2007.
He retired in 2014 due to health issues, but his work continues to be regarded as a benchmark in environmental reporting in Malaysia.
His passing marks a significant loss to the media landscape, particularly in advancing public awareness on environmental sustainability.
