Matrade Enhances Mitigation Framework to Strengthen Malaysia’s Export Resilience

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation is intensifying its mitigation efforts to ensure Malaysia’s export sector remains resilient amid global supply chain disruptions and geopolitical uncertainties.

Chairman Reezal Merican Naina Merican said the strategy focuses on strengthening the role of overseas offices to improve responsiveness to market changes and provide timely support to exporters.

He explained that these offices are now functioning as active monitoring centres, continuously assessing trade developments while assisting companies in adapting their operational strategies.

“In a volatile global environment, the ability to respond quickly is critical. Our overseas offices have been empowered to help exporters manage risks more effectively,” he said.

Flexible Logistics Strategies

Matrade is encouraging exporters to adopt flexible logistics strategies, including rerouting shipments to more stable ports such as Sohar and Salalah in Oman.

This approach aims to reduce reliance on high-risk maritime routes that may be affected by geopolitical tensions.

The agency is also exploring land and rail alternatives to ensure continuity in the movement of goods.

Such diversification is seen as essential in maintaining the stability of export operations.

Digital Transformation for Faster Decision-Making

As part of its digital initiatives, Matrade has launched the Interactive Virtual Assistant (MIVA) via the Madani Digital Trade Platform.

The AI-powered tool provides real-time information and guidance, enabling exporters—especially SMEs—to respond swiftly to market developments.

This initiative enhances efficiency and reduces dependency on conventional information channels.

Continuous Strategic Monitoring

Matrade’s internal task force continues to conduct regular reviews to assess the effectiveness of its mitigation measures.

These evaluations ensure alignment with national policies and facilitate coordinated responses across its global network.

The structured approach strengthens Malaysia’s capacity to address evolving trade challenges.

Industry Collaboration Expands Impact

The agency is also working closely with industry groups such as the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers, National Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia and Mid-Tier Companies Transformation Council.

These collaborations aim to develop strategic responses to issues including rising logistics costs and shifting global demand.

Reezal Merican said the integrated approach underscores Malaysia’s commitment to maintaining a competitive and resilient export sector despite an increasingly complex global economic landscape.
