Malaysian Dancers Secure Wildcard Spots for Red Bull Dance Your Style Regional Finals in Singapore
KUALA LUMPUR: Two Malaysian dancers have been selected as wildcard entries to compete at the Red Bull Dance Your Style Regional Finals, which will be held in Singapore this Saturday.
The announcement follows Malaysia’s debut stop in the Red Bull Dance Your Style Asia Tour, which took place earlier this month in Bukit Bintang, featuring workshops and performances by renowned international dancers.
Representing Malaysia on the regional stage
Chosen to represent the country are Lim Yeow Hwee, also known as Marcus, 26, from Johor Bahru, and Kayllash Thiagarajan, 19, from Kuala Lumpur.
They will face competitors from across Southeast Asia, including Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Timor-Leste, Vietnam and Singapore, in a bid to qualify for the world finals in Zurich this October.
Driven by pride and passion
Lim described the opportunity as a major milestone, saying he is eager to showcase Malaysia’s diverse dance identity to a wider audience.
“There’s a sense of responsibility, but also excitement to represent the Malaysian dance scene,” he said.
Kayllash echoed similar sentiments, calling the experience a significant step forward in his journey as a dancer.
“I’m thankful for this chance. It’s my first time competing in this format, and I want to express myself authentically,” he said.
Unique competition format
The competition features one-on-one freestyle battles, where dancers must improvise their moves to randomly selected music tracks.
Unlike conventional contests, the winner is determined entirely by audience votes, adding an element of unpredictability and engagement.
Rising profile of Malaysia’s dance scene
Their participation highlights the growing recognition of Malaysia’s street dance community, which continues to gain momentum with its unique blend of styles and influences.
Both dancers hope their performance will not only advance them in the competition but also elevate Malaysia’s presence on the global dance stage.
