Anwar Signals Possible Limits on Ministerial Travel as Malaysia Moves to Cut Energy Use
JOHOR BAHRU, April 25 — The government is considering stricter measures to curb energy consumption, including potential restrictions on travel by Cabinet members and ministries, as it responds to mounting pressure from the global supply crisis, said Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
He stressed that swift action is needed to prevent Malaysia from facing energy rationing scenarios seen in other countries.
Energy-Saving Measures Under Review
Anwar said authorities are refining a range of strategies to reduce overall energy use, including expanding work-from-home arrangements and other practical measures.
The aim is to manage available resources more efficiently during the current period of uncertainty.
Final Decision to Be Made by Economic Council
He noted that a final decision will be made during a meeting of the National Economic Action Council (MTEN), which has been actively monitoring the situation.
The council is holding frequent discussions with ministries and relevant stakeholders to assess developments.
Oil Supply Stable, Diesel Shows Early Strain
According to Anwar, Malaysia’s oil supply is expected to remain sufficient until the end of June, but diesel supply has begun to face pressure.
He said additional measures will be announced progressively as the situation evolves.
Frequent Meetings Reflect Urgency
The prime minister said MTEN is currently meeting every two days to closely track the energy supply landscape and ensure timely responses.
This reflects the government’s heightened vigilance in managing the crisis.
Immediate Action Needed to Avoid Wider Impact
Anwar emphasised that the situation has reached a critical stage, where delays in decision-making are no longer viable.
Any postponement, he warned, could negatively affect the economy and disrupt daily life if supply shortages occur.
State Election Schedule Not Yet Discussed
When asked whether the crisis could affect upcoming state elections, Anwar said the matter has not been discussed so far.
