Malaysia Falls Short in Thomas Cup Quarter-Finals as China Secures Dominant 3-0 Win
PETALING JAYA, May 1 — Malaysia’s campaign in the Thomas Cup ended at the quarter-final stage after a convincing 3-0 defeat to powerhouse China in Horsens, Denmark.
In the opening match, Leong Jun Hao faced world number one Shi Yu Qi in a challenging encounter. Despite forcing a decider by winning the second set, Jun Hao was unable to sustain his performance and eventually lost 10-21, 21-16, 9-21 in just over an hour.
The early setback placed Malaysia under pressure, with the responsibility shifting to the men’s doubles pair Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik to level the tie.
However, the world number two duo fell short against China’s Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang, losing 22-24, 14-21 in straight sets.
The match highlighted differences in control and execution, with the Chinese pair displaying greater consistency and dominance at the front court.
Wooi Yik acknowledged that unforced errors at crucial moments played a significant role in the defeat.
“We lacked consistency, especially at key points. Our opponents controlled the pace of the game much better,” he said.
Trailing 0-2, Malaysia’s hopes rested on second singles player Justin Hoh, who faced world number seven Li Shi Feng.
Justin was unable to turn the tide, losing 14-21, 13-21, which confirmed China’s 3-0 victory without the need for the remaining matches.
As a result, players such as Goh Sze Fei, Nur Izzuddin Rumsani and Lee Zii Jia were not called into action.
The result underscores the gap in consistency and tactical sharpness between the two teams, particularly under high-pressure conditions.
Despite the loss, reaching the quarter-finals provides valuable exposure for Malaysia’s younger players competing at the elite level.
