MAG Confirms 2026 Hajj Flights Will Proceed Despite Middle East Tensions, Safety Remains Priority
KUALA LUMPUR, April 2 — Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) has confirmed that its 2026 hajj flight operations will proceed as scheduled, despite ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East that have disrupted air travel in parts of the region.
Group managing director and chief executive officer Captain Nasaruddin A. Bakar said the airline remains committed to fulfilling its obligations to Lembaga Tabung Haji, with the first hajj flight set to depart on April 18 as planned.
He noted that while operations are currently on track, the company continues to closely monitor developments to ensure that all flights meet strict safety requirements.
“At present, everything is proceeding according to schedule. However, safety remains the top priority in every decision we make,” he said.
Heightened Vigilance Amid Regional Instability
Nasaruddin explained that MAG has intensified its monitoring efforts following ongoing instability in parts of the Middle East, which has led to airspace restrictions and operational disruptions for several international carriers.
He said the airline conducts daily risk assessments using intelligence gathered from multiple sources to evaluate the safety of each flight.
“Every route is carefully assessed before we operate. We will not compromise when it comes to passenger safety,” he said.
This proactive approach allows the airline to respond quickly to any changes in the security environment.
Targeted Measures Without Disrupting Overall Operations
While Malaysia Airlines has suspended flights to certain destinations, such as Doha, due to safety considerations, Nasaruddin stressed that these decisions are targeted and do not indicate a broader reduction in services across the region.
For key destinations such as Jeddah and Madinah, which are central to hajj and umrah operations, additional precautions have been implemented to ensure safe travel for pilgrims.
“We are taking extra measures for routes involving hajj and umrah to ensure all safety standards are met,” he said.
Long-Term Commitment to Pilgrimage Operations
Nasaruddin reaffirmed MAG’s commitment to its long-term agreement with Tabung Haji, which covers the transportation of Malaysian pilgrims over a five-year period.
He said any adjustments to operations would only be made if there are significant changes in the security landscape, and such decisions would be coordinated with relevant stakeholders.
“We remain fully committed to supporting Tabung Haji. If there are major changes, we will work together to make the necessary adjustments,” he said.
Uncertainty Persists, Monitoring Continues
Looking ahead, Nasaruddin acknowledged that the geopolitical situation remains fluid and unpredictable, requiring continuous monitoring.
He said the airline is prepared to reassess its operations should tensions escalate further, ensuring that both passengers and operational integrity are protected.
“We are confident with our current plans, but we will remain vigilant. If conditions change, we will take appropriate action,” he said.
The approach underscores MAG’s commitment to balancing operational continuity with stringent safety standards, ensuring that Malaysian pilgrims can perform their hajj journey with confidence despite global uncertainties.
