Lorry Driver Arrested After Viral SILK Highway Video Allegedly Shows Dangerous Driving and Obscene Gesture

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have arrested a lorry driver following the circulation of a viral video on social media allegedly showing him driving recklessly and making an obscene gesture while travelling along the Kajang SILK Highway towards Bandar Baru Bangi.

The incident, which drew widespread attention on TikTok and other social media platforms, prompted swift action from the authorities after concerns were raised over the safety of other road users.

Kajang district police chief Assistant Commissioner Naazron Abdul Yusof said the suspect, a 35-year-old local man, was detained by officers from the Criminal Investigation Division at the Kajang district police headquarters at approximately 8.45pm yesterday.

According to him, police had already become aware of the incident through the viral footage before an official police report was lodged at the Kajang police station at around 7.15pm.

“The suspect was arrested to assist investigations into allegations of dangerous driving on a public road and making an obscene gesture that could offend another individual,” he said in a statement.

Naazron said investigations are currently being conducted under Section 279 of the Penal Code, which covers rash, negligent or reckless driving that endangers human life or the safety of others.

If convicted, offenders under the provision may face penalties including imprisonment, fines or both, depending on the circumstances and severity of the offence.

The case is also being investigated under Section 509 of the Penal Code for allegedly making an obscene gesture with the intention of insulting the modesty of another person.

Police, however, did not disclose further details regarding the motive behind the incident or whether the suspect had any prior traffic-related offences.

The video, which spread rapidly across social media platforms, appeared to show a lorry being driven in a manner considered dangerous by other road users.

Several users expressed concern over the driver’s actions, describing the behaviour as irresponsible and potentially putting other motorists at risk.

The footage also allegedly captured the driver making an obscene hand gesture, which further fuelled public criticism and calls for enforcement action.

Road safety advocates have repeatedly warned that aggressive driving behaviour and emotional reactions behind the wheel remain among the contributing factors to traffic incidents nationwide.

The widespread sharing of dashboard camera recordings and mobile phone videos has also increased public scrutiny of reckless road behaviour, with many incidents now quickly attracting the attention of enforcement agencies.

Naazron said police take such complaints seriously, particularly when public safety is at stake.

He urged motorists to remain courteous while driving and to comply with traffic laws to ensure roads remain safe for all users.

“Police advise all road users to be considerate, obey traffic regulations and practise prudent driving habits.

“Mutual respect and patience on the road are important in ensuring the safety of everyone,” he said.

He also reminded the public to avoid engaging in provocative behaviour while driving, as emotional reactions can escalate situations and endanger lives.

The police chief added that members of the public who witness reckless or dangerous driving are encouraged to report the matter to the authorities and provide relevant evidence to assist investigations.

The case remains under investigation.
