KLIA Baggage Breakdown: MAHB to Reinforce Staffing, Report Weekly to Cabinet
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad has been ordered to step up manpower at key operational points and submit weekly updates following a major baggage system disruption at Kuala Lumpur International Airport that affected thousands of travellers.
Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the issue was brought up by Transport Minister Anthony Loke during a Cabinet meeting, where concerns were raised over the breakdown in airport operations.
The disruption, which occurred on Saturday and lasted about five hours, was linked to a technical issue at a substation operated by Tenaga Nasional Berhad in Bukit Raja.
Preliminary findings indicated that a trip in a 132kV Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) unit at around 4:54pm caused a voltage dip, severely affecting operations at KLIA Terminal 1 until systems were restored by approximately 10:30pm.
During the incident, a total of 23,769 pieces of baggage were handled. However, system failures led to 1,061 bags being left behind, while 120 bags were reported missing upon arrival.
The incident caused significant inconvenience to passengers and raised questions about the resilience of airport systems and contingency readiness.
Authorities have since called for immediate improvements, with MAHB expected to enhance workforce deployment and operational safeguards to prevent similar disruptions.
