Syed Yazid Syed Omar Backs Tunku Mahkota Ismail as Key Figure to Drive FAM Reforms
PETALING JAYA, April 6 — Kuala Lumpur FA (KLFA) president Syed Yazid Syed Omar has identified Tunku Mahkota Ismail as the most suitable candidate to lead the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), emphasising the need for strong leadership to rebuild the organisation.
He said the Johor Crown Prince’s success in managing Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) demonstrates a proven ability to transform football structures and deliver consistent results.
According to Syed Yazid, JDT’s achievements at both domestic and continental levels reflect a professional approach that could benefit the national football body.
“In my view, he has the vision and capability to implement meaningful reforms within FAM,” he said.
Experience Seen as a Major Advantage
He highlighted that Tunku Mahkota Ismail’s previous stint as FAM president gives him valuable insight into the organisation’s internal challenges.
Syed Yazid also stressed that allegations related to document falsification involving national players should not be hastily linked to the Crown Prince without full understanding of the issue.
Hamidin Named as Alternative Option
He also pointed to Hamidin Mohd Amin as another credible candidate, noting his experience with international bodies such as FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).
Hamidin previously served as FAM president for seven years before stepping down.
Leadership Vacuum Needs Urgent Resolution
FAM is currently facing a leadership vacuum following the mass resignation of its executive committee earlier this year.
The crisis, triggered by document-related controversies, has underscored the urgency of appointing a new leadership team.
Syed Yazid said the upcoming election must be handled carefully to ensure long-term stability.
Looking Ahead to a New Phase
He added that FAM requires a leader capable of restoring confidence among stakeholders and steering Malaysian football forward.
Support from regional bodies such as the Asian Football Confederation remains crucial during this transition.
The election for new leadership is expected to take place after the FIFA World Cup 2026, marking a potential turning point for Malaysian football.
