Historic Rebranding: UNIPSAS Becomes UNIQSAAS, Malaysia’s First Quran University

KUANTAN – A new chapter in Malaysia’s Islamic education landscape has begun following the rebranding of Universiti Islam Pahang Sultan Ahmad Shah (UNIPSAS) into Universiti Al-Quran Al-Sultan Abdullah Ahmad Shah Pahang (UNIQSAAS).

The historic announcement was made by the Sultan of Pahang, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah during a special ceremony held at Istana Abdulaziz in Indera Mahkota.

The declaration took place on the eve of Nuzul al-Quran, a night of deep spiritual significance for Muslims around the world.

During the ceremony, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Zambry Abdul Kadir formally presented the official letter confirming the institution’s name change to the Sultan.

The document was subsequently handed to Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail as a symbolic gesture marking the official recognition of the university’s new identity.

The occasion also coincided with the wedding anniversary celebration of the Sultan of Pahang and Tengku Ampuan Pahang, Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah.

Embedding Quranic Values in Modern Knowledge

Vice-Chancellor Professor Datuk Dr. Mohd Zawavi Zainal Abidin said the rebranding signifies a broader transformation aimed at strengthening the university’s mission.

According to him, UNIQSAAS will champion the philosophy of “Hudan Linnas”, which emphasises the Quran as a universal guide for humanity.

He explained that the Quran will serve as the core reference for academic and intellectual development within the institution.

Beyond religious practices, the Quran will also be integrated into diverse fields including leadership, ethics, law, community development and civilisational advancement.

“This vision seeks to place the Quran at the centre of knowledge creation and human development,” he said.

Entering a New Era After 30 Years

The announcement comes as the institution celebrates its 30th anniversary since its founding in 1996.

Over the years, the university has grown into a respected Islamic higher education institution in Pahang.

With its new identity as UNIQSAAS, the university aims to expand its role in advancing Quran-based scholarship while preparing future leaders equipped with strong moral and intellectual foundations.

The move is expected to strengthen Malaysia’s standing as an important centre for Islamic higher education in the region.
